This seemed like a perfect quote for today. I had a beach weekend with a few great childhood friends last weekend, and, whenever I get to reconnect with them, I’m reminded how incredibly important those friendships are. I never laugh as hard or stay up as late or have as much fun as I do with these girls. And it’s such a reminder that, those lifelong friendships, the ones you’ve had for as long as you can even remember, are so incredibly crucial. These girls know everything about me and we have a connection that you simply cannot have with people unless they have been a part of your life as long as you can remember it.
I keep reminding myself how important these friendships are in my life as I send my little guy off to school. He’s excited one minute and so nervous the next. I’m thrilled he gets to have this wonderful opportunity one minute and afraid he’s too young for it the next. Maybe I’ll keep him home a little bit longer… But the idea that he’s going to school not just to learn but also to create those kind of lifelong friendships spurs me on.
Because he might walk into the classroom this morning and do a puzzle with someone that he will be laughing with twenty-five years from now. And someone he stands in line behind at the slide tomorrow might still be his best fishing buddy in twenty years.
You may not be able to learn friendship in school, but, as I well know, that is so often where those lifelong bonds begin. If you’re sending your little ones off today, I hope they have a wonderful day!
What a sweet post. This time next year your son will be even more eager to go to school, to see the friends that he’s making now. 🙂
