What You Want

Nate Berkus

Happy Monday, everyone! I always try not to complain about the weather. I really do. Because, I mean, it’s not like a personal vendetta against me. It just is what it is. But I am tired of being cold. I got some adorable shorts and (book-signing!!) dresses in the mail last week, and it has been so cold I haven’t been able to bring myself to try them on. What is the world coming to when I don’t even want to try on new clothes?? Weather, it has officially become personal.

On the flight home from the Design Bloggers Conference (yes, I made it to Atlanta! Yay!) the two guys behind me were so tan and clearly had just been somewhere warm. I was so mad at them. Note to self: Next February, fly South.

Anyway, the Design Bloggers Conference was so much fun! I’ll be honest, I wasn’t really looking forward to it that much. I didn’t know what to expect at all, but it was a blast. My mom and I met so many amazing people — designers, bloggers, writers, magazine editors. The parties were totally five star (Thank you Sunbrella, Ethan Allen, Traditional Home and Pirch!) and everyone was so nice. I don’t think I had expected everyone to be so warm and welcoming and gracious.

The highlights were probably hearing Bunny Williams and Nate Berkus speak. Bunny (I’m just going to call them by their first names like we’re friends.) is such a design legend and the number of things that she still has her hand in exhausted me just thinking about it! I have loved Nate Berkus since his Oprah years. He is still as handsome and charming and funny and, best of all, he’s about to have a baby! Yay, Nate! His talk was extremely inspirational and all about being authentic and doing what you love. My favorite quote was above.

His passion for design and for his work is so clear and it was interesting to hear about the opportunities (major, amazing, big money opportunities) that he turned down because, in his heart, they didn’t feel right. And, while some might not consider interior design to be a great service to the world, how much better do we all feel when our homes are organized, clutter free, and we’re surrounded by things we love? The older I get, the more I believe that how we live is inextricably connected with every other part of our lives. And you know that Marie Kondo agrees.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and are ready for a great week. Welcome, March! Please bring us a little Spring!!

  • Kristy,
I would love to hear Bunny Williams and Nate Berkus speak. I have read enough about both of them to believe they are not only talented designers but really great people as well. What a fun conference. I wish you some signs of spring very soon. Winter on the east has been relentless!
    Have a good week.
    xo,
    Karen

    • Thanks, Karen! It was 70 degrees today! Yay! If we get back in the 30s, we’re just going to come live with you until about May. I hope that’s ok 🙂

  • Cute- “weather, it has officially become personal.” Glad you enjoyed the conference. I admire Bunny Williams — can you imagine working for Sister Parish and Albert Hadley? I bet she has lots of stories, and her career just keeps getting better and better. I like the quote from Nate Berkus, too. He’s a cutie, and it’s nice to hear that he’s just as charming as he appears.

    • Thanks, Vicki! I know, Bunny is amazing. I bet it was hard to even want to go out on your own when you got to work with those incredible designers!! But she’s certainly made a mark all on her own!
